The Subaru Crosstrek is excellent for Madison-area drivers seeking comfort, practicality, and capability with city-friendly space requirements.
While the subcompact crossover segment offers plenty of options, the Subaru Crosstrek's well-roundedness makes it a compelling pick. To provide some examples, here's a look at how it compares in a few key areas to another prominent class contender, the Honda HR-V.
2024 Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V: Performance
The Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V are each powered by 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines and closely matched for standard performance. The HR-V makes a slight edge in horsepower (158 vs. 152), while the Crosstrek has a bit more torque (145 vs. 138 pound-feet). Both models use a continuously variable transmission to handle gear ratios. However, as is true for all Subaru SUVs, every Crosstrek trim includes Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, providing surefooted handling for wintry Waunakee commutes. The Honda HR-V comes standard with front-wheel drive. AWD is an option, but it's not standard for any HR-V trim.
Are you looking for something a little more potent for your Watertown travels? A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is standard in Subaru Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness, increasing performance to 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The Honda HR-V doesn't offer an upgraded engine option.
2024 Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V: Capability
In addition to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, every 2024 Crosstrek has Subaru X-MODE®. This advanced traction management system automatically configures engine output, transmission ratios, AWD torque split, and braking to optimize control for slippery surfaces, uneven terrain, hill climbs, or steep descents.
The all-new Subaru Wilderness takes the Crosstrek's off-road prospects to the next level for outdoor enthusiasts looking to venture beyond paved streets. Wilderness models have Yokohama® GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires and a terrain-tuned suspension system, increasing ground clearance from 8.7 to 9.3 inches. A dual-function X-MODE® system adds Deep Snow/Mud settings. There's also a transmission oil cooler, more than double the Crosstrek's max tow rating to 3,500 pounds.
While the Honda HR-V has optional all-wheel drive, it's more suited for on-road driving and isn't as capable off-road. It also has significantly less ground clearance (seven inches), and its max tow rating is 1,500 pounds.

Both crossovers come standard with 7-inch touchscreens and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration. However, step up to any trim above the base model, and you'll get the Crosstrek's new 11.6-inch infotainment display and cord-free connectivity through wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The HR-V's largest 9-inch touchscreen and wireless smartphone integration are reserved for the highest EX-L trim.
Both models come standard with a suite of advanced driver aids, including forward collision mitigation, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. However, the Crosstrek's "Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering" system is more capable. The base trim also has steering-adaptive headlights, a feature you won't find in any HR-V.
